Titans v Chester

What started as a celebration for Alex Spurdle leading out the side on his 201st appearance for the Titans ended as a feast of nine exciting tries for the Titans.  The first came after only two-minutes of the game when Ben Heath stepped the Chester defence and accelerated through the gapup to the Chester twenty-two metre line before passing to Freddy Elliott toscore the try which Tom Putt converted to give the Titans a seven-point lead.  It was eleven-minutes before Chester gained any possession in the game and then they nocked on for the first scrum of the game.  With the ball in hand Chester did pose a threat putting together many good phases of play but the Titans defence now seem to have a deeper resolve and kept the Chester attack at bay.  The Titans gained possession and gradually worked their way into the Chester half and it was on twenty minutes when prop Ollie Schuster-Wood picked up from the back of the ruck  and burst through from the Chester ten-metre line using his strength and pace to run like a wing three-quarter to score the try which Putt converted.  Just three minutes later and Scott Gibson showed his class to make the break and score with Tom Putt adding the conversion the Titans had extended their lead to21-points.  Chester again put together some good phases of play which the Titans defence repelled and seemed to be able to keep out the Chester attack.  Itwas just as the first half was coming to a close that the ability of Ben Heath came to the fore again when he took the pass and with his elusive running scored the try which Tom Putt converted to give the Titans a try bonus pointand a twenty-eight point to nil half time lead.

It was ten-minutes into the second half before the next score when Chester were attacking Freddy Elliott read the ball well to intercept and race in for the try which Putt converted.  Try number six came from a superb break by Tom Putt who could probably have made the line himself butbeing the excellent team player he is he drew his man and passed to Scott Gibson for his second try of the afternoon which Tom Putt finished off with the conversion.  The Titans again attacked and from some close quarter work on the Chester line Archie Spokes scored the try which Putt again converted.  The Titans then replaced Scott Gibson at scrum half with Jay Toogood bringing on Dan Martin into the backline.  From a ruck Jay dummied to pass and the gap opened, he was through taking the ball to the Chester twenty-two metre line before passing to Archie Spokes for his second consecutive try which Tom Putt again converted taking the score to over fifty points for the Titans and a clean sheet against.  Chester never gave up and when the ball came to their wing Harrison Vare tries looked on the card.  He was able to get clear and had just Reece Malone to beat and for the really observant Reece changed his position blocking off the winger being able to cut inside making him go on the outside where Reece pulled off a spectacular tackle saving the try however, Chester were ableto recycle the ball and after several phases the ball came to Vare to score a try for Chester which Sam Rogers converted. Just two minutes later and Malone appears in attack for the Titans coming into the line at pace to make the break before passing to “man of the match” Freddy Elliot to score his third and hat trick try of the game.  For once Tom Putt missed the conversion but the Titans now had sixty-one points on the board and nine tries to their credit.  Chester held their resolve and with the last move of the game Tom Ellis who started as the Chester Fullback and finished the game as scrumhalf scored the try which Rogers converted leaving the final score Titans 61 Chester 14.

A solid win for the Titans whichwe hope will keep their confidence high for the trip to Redruth on Saturday.
