With the remembrance service overand the sounds of the Cadet Military band fading as they left the pitch, the Titans kicked off to start this epic match against their opponents Camborne. From the very start the opposition showed their intent by running at the Titans and quickly recycling ball to put the Titans defence under pressure. The Titans conceded the penalty and Cambourne kick to the corner, win the lineoutand maul to the line and their number 8 Aden Brassington scores the try with just three-minutes gone. Just eight-minutes gone and Camborne concede the penalty and anything Camborne is able to do so are the Titans, so they kick to the corner. Jo Elsworth who was superb in the lineout andin all other aspects of the game rose majestically to win the ball which theTitans mauled to the line for Alex Spurdle to score the try. The difference was Tom Putt kicked the conversion and the Titans were leading by two-points. Five more minutes and with Camborne dominating possession the Titans concede another penalty which Kyle Moyle the Camborne fullback converts to give Camborne a one-point lead. The Titans were having to defend some very robust play from Camborne and just three-minutes later Camborne backrow Sam Matevesi scored the try which Moyle converted to give Camborne an eight-point lead. This lead was extended when the Titans conceded their third penalty of the game for Moyle to add three extra points. The Titans came back with a vengeance and this time it was Camborne who conceded the penalty which Tom Putt slotted over to reduce the deficit. The Titans were having to defend but gradually gaining more possession but this was all in vain when the Titans conceded yet another penalty for Moyle to extend the lead. It was the Titans who then started to put the Camborne defence under pressure and Camborne who had conceded more penalties than the Titans were punished, when from a lineout drive from one of these penalties resulted in Isaac (sniffer) Dalton going in for the try which Tm Putt converted. From the restart the Titans drove at the Camborne defence and they gave away another penalty which Tom attempted but drifted just wide, bringing the half to a close with the Titans just four-points behind.
The second half started with Camborne kicking off and the Titans fielding and driving forward retaining the ball and putting together phases of play. Scott Gibson at scrum half was posing questions of the Camborne defence and Tom Putt was varying the game making the defence more challenge able and creating space. Cambourne were conceding penalties and on fitty two-minutes Tom Putt converted the penalty. The Titans were just one-point adrift, Ten-minutes of the game left and under pressure Camborne concede another penalty. Tom Putt now gives the Titans a one-point lead. From the re-start the Titans get the ball wide to Freddy Elliott who for the third time in the game is subjected to a high tackle coupled with a no arms tackle. The referee warns of the yellow card but changes to red when the response from the player to him comes. This reduces Camborne to 14 players. From the penalty the Titans win the ball but themselves concede the penalty and Camborne clear. Camborne win the lineout and the Titans concede the penalty only the second one in the second half. Moyle converts and Camborne are back with a one-point lead, “Man of the match” Ratu Vakalutukali (Toots) returns to the pitch after recovering from his injury and the Titans turn over the ball from there-start. Toots breaks from the ruck and completely outpaces the defence from the halfway line, a try, or so the spectators thought, only for the referee to deem he was held up. Camborne have the goal line drop out and the Titans press the Camborne line and from yet another penalty conceded by Camborne the Titans again win the ball and maul to the line for Archie Spokes to score the try which Tom Putt converts. Surely its full time, but the referee decides very correctly that there are twenty seconds left so the game must restart. The Titans have a six-point lead and re-start the game. Camborne now throw caution to the wind and attack the Titans who concede the penalty only their third in the second half. From the lineout Camborne maul to the line, constantly recycling the ball, having soaked in the Titans defence the ball goes wide and Camborne fly half Sam Walker goes in for the try. The spectators and everyone knows that this will be the last kick of the game and if it goes over Camborne win the game. The crowd is silent; the kick is taken and goes under the bar. The crowd erupts and the Titans have secured an epic win.
Whilst our player/coach Toots rightly won the man of the match award, there were outstanding performances in the rest of the team. The commitment and level of skills in both attack and defence was a continuation from the performance a fortnight earlier against our other Cornwall rivals. We wish the team well for the long travel to Lymm next week and feel confident that this performance will inspire them even more. The Warriors are also away again next week at Midsomer Norton but are home on the 29th of November playing against Chosen Hill Former Pupils. Your support for that game will be greatly appreciated. The next home game for the Titans is against Syston on 6th December.
