Toots Reaches 200: A Titan, A Marine, A Club Legend

This Saturday, Taunton Titans will celebrate a remarkable milestone as one of the club’s most cherished figures, Ratu Vakalutukali – “Toots”, pulls on the shirt for the 200th time.

In an era where loyalty is increasingly rare, Toots’ journey to 200 appearances stands as a powerful testament to commitment, humility and quiet excellence. Few players have left such a lasting imprint on Taunton RFC – not just through performances, but through the values they bring to the club every single week.

Born in Tavua on the north coast of Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu, rugby has always been part of Toots’ life. Like so many Fijians, he grew up with a ball in hand, learning the game from a young age before honing his skills at the renowned Queen Victoria School – an institution synonymous with producing leaders both on and off the field.

His path to Taunton was anything but conventional. After travelling to England, Toots embarked on a career with the Royal Marines, completing his training at Lympstone before being posted to 40 Commando in Taunton. Following deployment overseas, a simple poster at the barracks led him to Taunton RFC – a decision that would shape both his rugby career and the club’s modern history.

Starting out in the 2nd XV, it didn’t take long for his natural athleticism, relentless work rate and ability to beat defenders to catch the eye. When Tony Yapp took charge, Toots was quickly brought into the Titans squad – and from there, he became an ever-present force in the back row.

Over the years, supporters have come to know exactly what Toots brings: wholehearted carries, tireless defence, big moments in big games and, above all, a selfless commitment to the team. He has been part of promotion campaigns, memorable victories and the club’s rise to competing consistently at National League level – all while balancing elite rugby with the demands of military service.

Despite the noise from the terraces whenever he gets the ball, Toots remains as modest as ever. Teammates, coaches and supporters alike speak of a player who leads through actions rather than words – a man who embodies what it means to be a Titan.

As he reaches 200 games, it’s fitting that the milestone is marked not just as a personal achievement, but as a celebration shared by the entire club.

Reflecting on the occasion, Toots said:

“I’m incredibly grateful to the club, my teammates and especially the supporters. The support I’ve felt over the years means everything to me and my family. I’ve loved every minute of playing here and wearing this badge – thank you for backing me every step of the way.”

A supporter favourite, a teammate’s teammate, and a true servant of the club – 200 games is a milestone richly deserved.

Congratulations, Toots
