Mike Jordan - 1933/2019
It is with deep regret that we announce the death of former player and 1st XV Captain (1959/61) Mike Jordan.
After attending Keble College, Oxford, Mike became a master at King’s College Taunton from the late 1950’s until 1988. He was Head of Geography for many years, Head of Physical Education and Rugby 1st XV Coach,Housemaster of King Alfred House and Second Master and prior to retirement,Senior Master.
It was noted in the Taunton RFC centenary booklet “A Hundred Years of Taunton Rugby” that the section headed – 1960’s – A Peak Period - With players such as Mike Jordan, Ray Mildon, Mike Wilkins, Derek Reid, John Beer, Terry Barwell, and J Kingsley Thomas coming into the team, together with back row forward Tony Kendall, Irish triallist Terry Davies and hooker Arnold Trott, the scene was set for a build up to a most successful period.
Wilkins succeeded Telling as Captain of the Club and then handed over to Mike Jordan. Kingsley Thomas, Beer and Barwell formed a tremendous mid-field trio, always providing clever and often brilliant rugby, causing palpitations in the breasts of the opposing defence.
Mike also made 22 appearance for Somerset RFU
He retired to Cheltenham where he had been brought up and educated before going to Keble College, Oxford.
He will be remembered with affection and respect by generations of Old Boys and former colleagues in the Masters’ Common Room.
Mike was a member of the Friends of Taunton Titans during his retirement.
Our condolences go out to immediate family and friends at this very sad time.
His funeral will take place at Cheltenham Crematorium on Wednesday 21 August at 2.30pm.
