The final game of the season could not have had a more fitting setting. Beneath the floodlights, with the main pitch glowing against the night sky, Taunton RFC’s U14 Raptors brought their season to a close in unforgettable fashion.
For players, parents, coaches, volunteers, and supporters alike, Friday Night Lights was more than just a rugby match — it was a celebration of everything the team has achieved together throughout the season.
“How fitting the last game of the season was under lights, no better place to highlight how far you have come. To show your skills, your spirit, fitness and togetherness as a team.”
Nicholas Mace
From the moment the players arrived and saw their names displayed in the changing rooms, there was a sense that this was something special. As they ran through the tunnel onto the illuminated pitch to cheers, applause, and high-fives from the crowd, the atmosphere captured everything that grassroots rugby is about.
“The true rugby experience for our U14’s! The arrival to their names up in the changing rooms, a crowd of supporters, cheers and high fives as they ran from the tunnel onto the lit up pitch, everyone behind them with cheers of support from family, friends and the Taunton rugby community.
“The culmination of a full season of learning, growing and bonding, there was no better way to celebrate their successes. The look of pride and excitement on their faces was an experience money couldn’t buy, this could only be topped by the sheer exhilaration experienced by the parents watching their children be part of this family!”
Alun Hiett
The rugby itself lived up to the occasion. Played at a frantic pace in front of a large and vocal crowd, the match showcased not only the talent within the squad but also the trust, teamwork, and resilience that have been built over the course of the season.
“Playing rugby under the floodlights brings a unique, cinematic intensity to the game, where the vibrant green pitch seems to burn against the pitch-black night.
“Winning under these conditions feels amplified, especially when it is achieved through absolute unity and high-tempo rugby, as every pass and tackle feels crisp and intentional. In such a performance, the forwards dominant in the scrums and the backs link up seamlessly, moving the ball with precision that reflects deep trust in one another.
“It is the culmination of shared effort — where one person’s hard-fought tackle sparks a counter-attack, and the whole team takes the glory — leaving the pitch with arms around each other, celebrating not just a win, but a flawless exhibition of teamship.”
Richard Norman
For many on the touchline, the evening carried a deeper emotional significance. Watching the players perform under the lights highlighted just how much they have grown — not only as rugby players, but as teammates and young people.
“Standing by the touchline under the floodlights on the main pitch, it’s hard not to feel a deep sense of pride watching the U14s ‘Raptors’ play their last match of the season, and what a great game of rugby it was!
“As a parent, seeing their commitment, teamwork, and resilience come to life in such a setting is genuinely special. And as a first aider, there’s an added layer of responsibility — keeping a watchful eye while quietly admiring their determination and growth.
“It’s one of those moments where both roles come together, and you realise just how much these experiences mean, both on and off the field.”
Sarah Holloway
The evening was also a celebration of the wider Taunton RFC community. Before the match, a mixed girls’ and ladies’ touch rugby game brought together players of different ages and backgrounds, setting the tone for an inclusive and welcoming night.
“Friday night was an amazing family event. It kicked off with a girls and ladies mixed touch game which my daughter (12) and her friend (11) joined in with and thoroughly enjoyed — especially considering they don't normally play for Taunton, they were made to feel very welcome and included in the game.
“Afterwards the U14 boys came out to a roaring crowd for what turned out to be an exciting game. It was great to be on the main pitch on a Friday night with the bar open for refreshments.
“Looking forward to hopefully doing it again next season.”
Louise Clarke
The support from the rugby community was evident throughout the evening, with players from rival local clubs also coming down to cheer on friends and teammates.
“As parent, supporter and coach at TRFC it was fantastic to see the club really get behind the women/girls and junior section for a Friday Night Lights spectacular.
“Rugby truly was the winner (as were the Raptors!). The U14s game was played at a hard and frantic pace with all players buoyed on by the large and vocal crowd.
“A particularly nice moment for me was seeing some of the boys’ friends from school, who play for rival local clubs, come down to lend their support too.
“Well done to all involved, particularly the volunteers who keep the wheels turning for this club of ours!”
Andrew Freeman
As the final whistle blew and the players celebrated together under the lights, the evening perfectly captured what makes rugby special: teamwork, pride, friendship, community, and shared memories that will last long after the season ends.
For the Raptors, Friday Night Lights was not just the final game of the season — it was the perfect reflection of how far they have come together.
