Taunto nTitans put in a top class performance to celebrate long serving player Alex Spurdle’s first home game since making his 200th first team appearance for the club the previous weekend at Luctonians.

When Chard born Alex led the team out onto the pitch against Chester on Saturday , aside that had beaten Titans in the away fixture earlier in the season, little did those who were watching know that at the end of a hard fought game in which the long serving player was always in the midst of ,the hosts would end with a 61-12 victory.

After the match Alex was presented with a framed shirt and his commemorative 200th cap about which he said: “Over the years that I have been at Taunton the club has given me so many memories on and off the pitch with past and present players and coaches. It’s been a massive part of my life, and I’m just so grateful that Im still pulling on the jersey and making a contribution.”

“I have enjoyed all the memories of my time here at Titans the highs and the lows and now its about trying to pass that onto the younger lads because around a core of senior players we are a young squad  and building quite well , but we have still got a lot to learn.”

Regarding the game Alex said: “If you’d have told us before hand that we were going to win like we did we would have snatched your hand off. It was a dogged performance by the boys and we stuck to the script well and deserved ourvictory.”

Titans head coach Tony Yapp who was responsible for the hooker joining Titans in the first place said: “Alex has been here a long time- like me and was one of the first players who came on board when I got started here.

“The Club is built on people like Alex, he has been tremendous for us on and off the field a real stalwart and I can’t speak highly enough of him as a person or as a player. He always puts his body on the line and is so reliable

“I think that the success of Taunton Rugby Club over the last 10 or 12 years is down to people like Alex and he should take a lot of credit for that. We are starting to build slowly again and he is at the heart of that so I cant speak highly enough of him.”

The head coach added: “After deciding to come to join us Alex has not wavered once and Im very happy that he made that decision. I have no doubt that he could have played at a higher level so it’s a credit to him that he is keen to stay and help us to build something special at Taunton Rugby Club.”
