Plymouth Albion 26-14 Taunton Titans

PLYMOUTH covered much of their pitch overnight on the Friday to enable the anticipated local derby to go ahead, writes Hugh Duder.

The thaw came just in time giving way to a cold but sunny afternoon of rugby. Taunton brought in two debutants on loan from Bath, flyhalf George Worboys and winger Gabriel Goss whilst welcoming back Nick Mason to the squad.

However, within five minutes of the start they lost centre Toby East to a hamstring injury. Two minutes later the ball was lost in a tackle and Plymouth opened the scoring with a converted try. A line out and a maul soon doubled Albion’s score to make it 14-0.

Titans started to show glimpses of flair through Banks and Goss and after camping in the opposition twenty-two for long periods came up with a well deserved try by Sam Knott. Therefore, at the half time break the score was 14-7.

A strong feeling among the Titans supporters that this could be their day was short lived as Albion went in wide for a converted try early in the second half to make it 21-7. Taunton then started to dominate with Vakalutukali and Mason making in roads, and they were rewarded with a well worked try for Goss on debut.

It was also Goss’s 21st birthday on the day. This try was converted by the equally impressive debutant Worboys. Game on again but on the 56th minute mark, Albion’s man of the match then broke loose to make the score 26-14 which ended the scoring.

Both teams had to work hard for territory during the last 24minutes and with spirited performances from numerous players both benches were emptied. This enthralling encounter certainly entertained the large crowds who braved the elements.

Both sides disciplined defence held firm and Taunton will have left frustrated at the final whistle by not adding to their score. Their performance bodes well for 2023 and they can go forward with confidence and look to greater rewards with optimism starting with two home fixtures against Cambridge on January 7 and Sale on January 14.
