Taunton RFC played Winscombe RFC in the Quarter Finals of the Somerset Cup on Thursday evening under lights at the Comms Plus Stadium.

The first half saw both sides fully committed to playing open running rugby with Taunton edging their opponents in most areas of the game. However, uncharacteristic errors and lack of accuracy at critical times held Taunton back and prevented them from getting a firm upper hand and scores on the board. Winscombe soaked up the pressure throughout the half and at times looked dangerous on the counter with only stout defence keeping the Taunton try line unbreached. At the turnaround Taunton held a narrow lead.

The second half saw Taunton begin to dominate, their phase play and stronger runners started to create the platform needed to play their wide expansive game. With the handling errors reduced the tries started to flow, great running lines and support play resulted in scores on both wings and as the forwards began to dominate, the set piece provided the platform needed to keep the score board climbing as the Winscombe side struggled. With the Winscombe defence tiring and gaps appearing, Taunton piled on the pressure and at the final whistle the score was 39-3 to Taunton who now progress to the Semi Finals of the Somerset Cup seeking to put more Silverware in the Cabinet.

The Taunton Scorers were:

Tries – Sam Baker 1, Jamie Fleming 1, Alfie Gardiner 2, Ben Oliphant-Thompson 1, Connor Banks 1

Cons - Sam Baker 3

Pens – Sam Baker 1
