Taunton Titans v Old Redcliffians Match Report

The Titans were pushed all the way in this local derby with only a high tempo second half with 5 tries saving them. It was Old Redcliffians that took an early lead as they broke straight through the middle with a try for flanker Scott Coster. Former Titan Kieran Hill kicked the conversion before the Titans scored on their first attack when after a quick tap from scrum half Jacob Nash that took it close to the Old Reds line and after several forward drives hooker Chris Francis was driven over the line. Gary Kingdom kicked the conversion to tie the scores. The Titans then took the lead with a converted try with flanker Julian Salvi claiming the touchdown after the Titans moved the visitors from one side of the pitch to the other.

Back came Old Reds once again finding a week spot in the Titans defence and claiming their second converted try this one scored by flyer Henry Bird. With the game tied it was Old Reds the took the advantage at half time with a penalty kicked by Hill.

In the second half it was all Taunton with 5 unanswered tries and 3 in the space of 5 minutes. The hosts scored early in the second half from a line out on the Old Reds 22 meter line Lewis Webb made a break and took it to the line then Francis cleverly used the bottom of the post to claim his second try before the 5 minutes that decided the game. First over was Jacob Nash with a break through the middle of a ruck, followed by Ollie Rice after a turnover in the middle of the pitch and then straight from the kick off Gary Kingdom returned the kick and Sam Brown read the play well and intercepted and ran in the try untouched. With the pace of the game high the visitors were beginning to fatigue and Taunton scored one more when Isaac Dalton burrowed his way over after a great break from Ollie Rice. With Kingdom adding all the extras the score was 49 – 17 with 15 minutes to go. The game started to get messy, however Old Reds kept going to the end but with the home sides defence working hard they failed to score.

This was a great way for the Titans to get back to winning ways but will face an even sterner test next Saturday with another local derby this on away to Dings Crusaders who are sitting in mid table after their return to the division.
