Moving Away? - Don't stop play!

MOVING AWAY? ~ DON’T STOP PLAY!
The RFUs campaign to retain players, especially within the 16 – 24 ages came to the club this week. The ‘playon’ program succeeds in finding and placing players into new clubs, as they move away from home to college, university, employment or school. The scheme will also actively promote the club to new players arriving in the area.
Any player’s who are considering a move from home, may not have searching for a new club very high on their list of priorities, so why not let the RFU do it for you! It’s entirely free, and you only need fill in a short form to become registered. After this the club O2 Pathfinder and the RFU do the rest! Your form will be sent to Twickenham, where the playon team will find the nearest suitable club or university team for you. All going to plan, you will be contacted by your receiving O2 Pathfinder, who will advise you of who, when and where they will be able to introduce you to your new team. It’s really easy! No searching a strange town or city, no awkward introductions to the wrong person and no frustrating phone calls to a new club, - just a smooth transition to your next club and team, allowing your mum to sleep soundly in the knowledge you are being looked after!!
The RFU aims to have 1380 O2 Pathfinders in place within clubs, universities, colleges and schools, so there’s every chance there’ll one near to your destination.
Your club O2 Pathfinder is Oli Massingham, who can be contacted on either 0786 6680351 or oli.massingham@tauntonrfc.co.uk
Please feel free to contact me and I will happily have a chat and answer any questions you may have, or alternatively you can log onto www.playonrugby.com for further details.

Happy Birthday Danny
-
23/02/2009
|
Danny Ward has joined the "pensioners" set as he has now reached the 65 milestone on Friday 20th February.
Danny (Denzil Raymond) moved to Taunton RFC from Newton Abbot in the late sixties and was a regular 1st XV scrum half for many years, hanging up his boots finally around 1979.
He shares his birthday with such notable names as Gordon Brown (PM), Jimmy Greaves, Sidney Poitier, Phil Neal, Buffy Sainte-Marie and on the very same day in 1944 Roger Knapman - British MP for UKIP.
Danny is a regular supporter of Taunton rugby, along with the ever increasing band of current followers, travelling to all away matches whenever possible.
He especially enjoys his visits to the Devon clubs of Torquay and Brixham and is very sorry that we probably won't be playing them for a while.
Happy Birthday Wardy, we can see that you enjoyed yourself.

2nd XV Supporters Pre-Match Meal – 21st Feb
-
13/02/2009
|
|
Taunton currently have three senior men’s teams playing league rugby. You will all be aware of the tremendous success the 1st XV are having and it is with great pleasure to see this feat also being accomplished by our 2nd XV - who are flying high near the top of Somerset Division One. Made up of a mixture of exciting young talent and many club stalwarts it is hoped they can push for promotion to Somerset Premier this season. This would be a remarkable achievement and something the club as a whole should be rightly proud of. How many clubs can say they have such strong 1st and 2nd teams?
The 1st XV are away at Torquay on Saturday 21st February so the 2nd XV will be playing on the main pitch against top of the table St. Bernadette’s Old Boys. Taunton, second placed, must go all out to secure a win if they are to reach their aim and finish champions.
In order to offer them as much support as possible a pre-match meal has been arranged for the day. It is hoped that supporters of the club, friends and families of players and anyone with an interest in watching some entertaining rugby come and attend. It would be great to experience a lively atmosphere that would go a long way in giving the team the encouragement and recognition they so deserve.
A two course carvery is priced at £12 pp and tables for up to 10 people are available. If you cannot book a whole table then there is plenty of provision for small groups, couples or singles to form part of a table. Attendees must arrive for a 1pm sit down.
Bookings can be made by phoning the club directly on 01823 336363 email steve.sanger-davies@tauntonrfc.co.uk or call John Howe on 01823 333279 email john@j444how.co.uk – Bookings have to be made before Tuesday 17th February.
The 3rd XV are also at home that day and their kick-off has been brought forward so they can add their support.
Please come along and support another successful Taunton RFC team….
Ben Goddard

Wanderers Announce Post Christmas Meal

02/12/2008
|
|
Saturday 31st January - Wanderers Meal
A date has been confirmed for the annual Wanderers mid-season Meal. Time and venue is to be confirmed but we thought it best to get the date out asap so people could mark it in their diaries.
As with all Wanderers events, invitation is not restricted to the current playing squad. All past and present players and members are welcome to attend, and it is very much hoped they do so.
It is likely to be a themed evening consisting of 'non-standard' fancy dress or smart attire - yet to be decided. However, what will be assured is plenty of high spirits and errr, spirits.
More to follow.

The Inaugural
‘Bill Pearse & Mike Berry Youth Cup’
19th October 2008
This season will see the inaugural annual competition of a cup sponsored by Bill Pearse (Taunton), and Mike Berry (Bridgwater), to be contested by Taunton RFC and our close neighbours, Bridgwater & Albion RFC’s youth sections and to be hosted this year at Hyde Park.
The two clubs will both field teams in all youth age grades where available, ranging this year from Under 7’s to Under 14’s.
The two clubs are proud to have agreed to hold fund raising activities on the day, with all proceeds to be donated towards the Help for Heroes charity fund, which is providing much needed assistance to our injured service personnel returning from active duty, particularly in Afghanistan and Iraq.
In future years, the competition will take place on the first playing day of the youth season in September, and will be played at each club on alternate years. Both clubs hope you will be able to come along and join us in a celebration of young local rugby prowess and in doing so help us support this very worthwhile cause.
Kick off’s start at 10.30am for the very youngest players, with the final match between the under 14’s due to start at 11.45, followed by the presentation of the cup.
Food and drink, as usual will be available throughout the day, and for the real hardcore supporters, you may like to stay and watch Taunton’s Colts play in their National Cup match, with the KO expected to be around 1.15pm.
With so many teams playing on one day, Taunton’s organisers would urge supporters and players to car share if at all possible to try and ensure a parking space on the day.
Please do not block the road outside the main gates and have some consideration for other local road users and our neighbours.

Taunton United 31 - Honiton 12
-
01/09/2008
|
|
Taunton United started their season with an away friendly to Honiton.
In superb sunny weather Taunton proved too strong for the Devon side winning 31-12.
Being the first game things started a bit slowly with balls being dropped and tackles being missed but after Honiton scored an early try Taunton soon stepped up a gear with strong running from midfield opening up a hole in the defence and Mark Elliott went over under the posts to score, Tim Hollow slotted the conversion. Scrummaging uphill first half Taunton worked overtime to stop the big Honiton pack driving them backwards, the front row of Wiltshire, Dean and Sankey held solid. John Fitzsimon in the second row was next to go over after a mazy run from hooker James Dean, his run opened a gap and with a slick pass he put Fitzy under the posts, Tim Hollow converting.
Second half, coming down the slope, Taunton started to slightly dominate the game, Lee Jeremiah in the back row was on top form to keep the supply of ball coming out to the backs and when Tim Hollow saw a slight gap he dropped his shoulder and split the defence to score, converted by scrum half Mark Winter.
Honiton played some fantastic rugby at times and scored a great try from almost their own try line. Some fast hands put the winger away for a try out wide.
Mark Winter scored a typical poachers try as all good scrum halfs should do when Taunton had Honiton all over the place in the scrum and the ball popped out the side for Winter to dive on, subsequently converting his own try.
Dave Webber finished off the scoring with a well finished try out wide after the forwards had worked down the pitch.
A good start for Taunton United, who now travel away to Ivel for another friendly on Saturday 6th.
Taunton United were promoted last year going up a league to Somerset 1. |

Trial at Bath Road
-
26/08/2008
|
|
Taunton will no doubt blood some of their new signings and potential 1st XV players when they visit Bridgwater on Wednesday night (27th - k.o. 7.30) in a "friendly" encounter against a Development XV.
Bridgwater played two matches against Welsh side Glamorgan Wanderers last Saturday with the Development XV being the only winners. Below is a press report of the matches.
BRIDGWATER went down 34-5 to Welsh Premier League side Glamorgan Wanderers in their first pre-season friendly of the season at Bath Road
In the senior game Glamorgan Wanderers went ahead with two penalty goals and then scored four tries in quick time to lead 34-0 at half-time.
The second half saw ‘Bridgy’ with the advantage of the wind behind them and after 10 minutes they scored through debutant Steve Hunt after some good work by England Under2 0 international scrum half Luke Cozens.
After the match Mike Tewkesbury said: “They were quite a stern test for us asked several questions which our players had to cope with in a game in a game situation.” He went on: “In the first half, we had more of the ball than they did, but less territory. In the second session however we had the best of both ball and territory and won it 5-0, however we should have had more scores.”
Earlier in the afternoon Bridgwater won the game between the two development sides and after a scoreless first half, two tries from Rob Allen, and one each from Keiron Lewitt and Rob Johnson, saw the hosts to a 24-0 win.
Regarding the development game Tewkesbury said: “The development game showed that we have some good young players in our squad and I expect that a couple of them will be ready to step up to the first team in the near future.”
Bridgy are in action again at Bath Road on Wednesday when they are likely to field several first team players in the Development XV to play Taunton, kick off 7.30pm. |

Somerset v Middlesex - County Championship.......
-
14/05/2008
|
|
Somerset play Middlesex at Taunton's Hyde Park ground on Saturday 17th May (k.o 2.30p.m.).
This match is the last fixture in the preliminary round of the Bill Beaumont Cup (South) when Devon also take on Gloucestershire at Plymouth Albion.
Somerset are currently in second place after 2 matches, having lost the opening encounter against Devon 19 - 13 at Barnstaple, but picking up a very good win against Gloucestershire 29 - 23 last Saturday away at Lydney.
Extract from the RFU website reads ......SOMERSET are predicting a thrilling weekend of rugby in the final round of pool games in the Bill Beaumont Cup.
Somerset, just like their South pool rivals Devon and Gloucestershire, could all still qualify for the final so each team has something to play for. Middlesex, Somerset’s opponents at Taunton RFC, kick-off 230pm, meanwhile will be fighting to retain their place in the premier county competition next season.
Head Coach Clive Book said: “Every team now has something to play for. Middlesex will be looking to survive in the cup so need a win, while Gloucestershire, Devon and ourselves need to win to keep alive our chances of getting to the final. It is going to be a big weekend of rugby.
“For us, we know we have got to win and hope Devon slip up, but it’s going to be a tough game. Middlesex have been involved in two close games and although they have lost both they have pushed Gloucestershire and Devon. They’ll certainly be coming here to have a go at us. We can’t be complacent; we have got to be up for the challenge.
“We have got a few more players available to us, so we will pretty much be at full strength. We are reasonably confident in our form, so now we are looking for a consistent 80 minute performance.”
Somerset picked up their first win in the Bill Beaumont Cup on Saturday following an impressive 23-29 win over former cup greats Gloucestershire. The win gives them two vital points on the league table.
Book added: “It was good to get our first win under our belts after the disappointment of losing so narrowly to Devon a week earlier. At half-time, we didn’t look like we were going to win it, but we turned it around and took our chances.”

Taunton 1st XV have reached the final of the Somerset Cup competition for the first time in many years, having beaten Weston-Super-Mare in a closely fought contest in the previous round.
